1973 CB750 VIN Question |
Lead | |
|
I bought a 1973 CB750 yesterday. On the title and bike it says that the VIN is CB750-1209980 and that it is in fact a 1973. None of the information that I
have found online has shown that that VIN would be in the sequence as Honda had for 1973's. It has 4 to 1 pipes. I cannot as of yet find any supporting
information to look the VIN up to find out exactly what it is and/or what repair/owners manual to get. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is a link to a page that has serial numbers/model guides. That should help you
identify yours by number. Keep in mind that a lot of people add 4 to 1 pipes to earlier models. It is very common. Every cb I have ever had already had 4 to
1's on them. Hope that helps a little. I am sure all the experts around here will drop by and put in their 2 cents.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Thanks for the speedy reply. By this information, my VIN number would be a '71? Not a '73? Confused.

Here's another timeline/ list of vin's. But I'm with ya- doesn't seem to make since
for your '73's # not to start with a 2xxxxxxx. I bet Old Hemi would know.

Are you saying the title is calling teh bike a '73 or that the date tag on the side of the neck says '73? It's not uncommon for bikes to end up
titled as later years if they sat unsold at a dealership for a while. If the date tag on the neck says '73 that would be more curious.

Where on the neck?

On the left side of the neck is a stamped VIN number. On the right side is a riveted-on date tag that should match the VIN and have the month/year of
manufacture.

I suspect that the title vin was boogered along the way. I bet that 1st number should be a 2 not a 1. Check your neck as everyone says. If you
still have the tag, it will say the build date.
I have a 1957 Chrysler, vin tag - SN1957 - xxxxx. The title from 1963 says SN1975-xxxx. Transposed by some caring DMV cretin way back. Honda did not always start the new model year on the same month. Usually they started on the 6 or 7th or even the 8th month. So, a '73 could have been made as early as 6/72. I have not found a reliable source as to when all of the model changes took place. update....thank you to all for the assistance so far..... | ||

It seems that oldhemi is on the right track. I actually got the original owners manual today. It is for 1969-71. The number on the engine matches the number
on the neck, though the number on the neck it hand etched. Is there any significance to this? Am I led to believe that it is a CB750K1?

This is a stock frame, right??? If not, then nevermind. If you are not sure, try to post some links to some pics.
Honda never had a SOHC CB750 leave the factory/assembly point with matching frame/engine numbers. I am not saying that it did not happen due to a fluke. Or, more likely created when an engine was switched out after leaving. But, I do not think this is the case with your bike. I beleive that somewhere along the line the original title was lost. Bike was re-registered and titled in a state that uses motor number. I have heard that some states only used motor numbers back then. (Harleys only had motor numbers for many years) The numbers that are "etched" on your neck came from the motor number. Honda's stamping was a little crude back then - kinda looked like they were done on Cub Scout Project Night. But they are deep stamped. And, Honda did attach a lead VIN Tag riveted on the right side of the neck. Right and left sides are determined from the rear of the bike - or - when you are sitting on it. Your missing tag sounds a little fishy. You should be OK with a title and the motor number plainly visable if you have to prove something to DMV or cop.
