Shit is getting so tight here in Tulsa, I may have to relocate to another city for work. If that happens, watch the For Sale section. I have way too much stuff to haul and anything I sell is gonna be very attractively priced.

I work in IT. I've been stuck in contract jobs for the past 2 years. Once again, the company I worked for decided to do a headcount cut. Contractors go
first. Yep, you guessed it, I lost my job this morning.

Same thing here Brother... looks like my IT related job may dry up ... contract is done in June. Hoping to get an interview with the "new" company
...lol
It sure is in the water lately... seems like there are NO lifelong careers anymore. You just ride the wave til the biz is sold out and move on to the next... kinda like big league sports players... there's no allegence to "team" ...it's all about the money. Businesses will cut 1000 people out of jobs to "save a little money" and not think twice about how it affects them and their families. good luck on your end! peace! Firehawk
If you can't tell it's not a Harley, I won't tell you it's a Honda.

Man, that sucks! IT is tough enough as it is, especially if it's corporate level. I can attest to that. I sure hope you guys get back in the saddle soon.
It was Honda first, all through the middle, and if I have my way, till the end as well.
Most people say what they'll do. Very few actually do what they say. |

I can relate,a friend just got laid off {permanently}.never missed a day in 11 yrs. company got rid of its last 2 full time drivers cause of benefits and a
months paid vacation. They don't have to give anything to part time workers. Asshole executives.

IT has to have been the worst business to be in since 2000. Actually goes back a little further. HIB visas, outsource to India, IBM, Perot etc has made it a
very dicey deal. No union, no govt interest in keeping these jobs here etc. Once high paying jobs - depending of course on the latest tech to come into play.
I applied for permanant long-term disability last week. I had been working in this biz since '70 - learned it in the USMC. I just can't do it any longer. Intricate Operating Systems type Programming has become (to me) very hard and very exhausting work. I have had some great jobs as a contractor for 18+ of those years. Last few years I worked for large Computer companies including my current and soon to be hopefully last employer - IBM. I feel for you younger guys working now in this field. Way too much compitition for very quickly becoming lower paying jobs and shittier benefits. Last year I paid out 25K for health related deals between me and the wife. Thats with IBM's "excellent" insurance. Basically wiped out my rainy day fund. I thought that years ago there should have been an union - too late now with globalization. Maybe there would not have been those constant 60 hour weeks, no real vacations, Sunday night stress etc. I figured a long time ago that hourly billing was the way to go - and it was until Mainframe work dried up in 2000. Then I had to work for Software companies and 60 hours turned out to be a short week! Talk about short-staffing on old software products that were not being sold much anymore - just real profitable(for the company) maintenance. If I don't get my disability from IBM, I am screwed and will have to start seeking some short term contracts out anywhere in North America. I really cant handle more than a few months on and a few months off. I hear the being a mainframe Dinosaur could be a good thing these days. Sorry for my mini-rant. But, I do feel for you younger guys these days in this business. "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." Ben Franklin at signing of Declaration of Independence or was it Dawg at
the WHCM to the other HCMF's.

Just so you know, it is NOT just in the IT business, it is hitting hte tradesmen too, real hard. I have worked from 8 am until 11 pm, doing whatever wo9rk
comes in the door, just to barely get by. and if I don't go on a group[ ride someplace, it is not because I don't want to, it is because the money
needed to go, and work that pays the bills, is not there, where in the past, it was always there.

Closed both of my businesses in the last couple of years because of this economy. Paying the tax man HEAVY. You don't even want to know, believe me. Got
REAL LUCKY (only time in my life) and got hired by the only business with money in my area. It finally will turn around for my family in the next few years
after struggling for a long time.
My point, which was spoken to me by the CEO and President of the Fortune 50 business that hired me: Sometimes doors close so new doors can open. It meant quite a bit to me when spoken and it came from someone very wise and successful. I wish to share that feeling with you. I hope you find a piece of luck like I have. If I could send you a piece I would, genuinely.
"In the wind, with my mind on my money and my money on my mind"...now I just gotta get some.
