- I am curious about the possibilities of adding a kickstarter onto a SOHC that doesn't have one. I know that electrical/ battery problems are a common problem with the SOHC engines, and the battery drains if you're not careful. A lot of Nighthawk owners use a battery tender to keep the battery topped up between rides. Also, the battery doesn't charge at anything below 3000rpms. Is is possible to have both a battery and a kickstarter as a backup? Is it one or the other?
- I am also wondering about a deep-cycle battery as opposed to a 'starter' battery. The reason being is that deep-cycle batteries hold their charge for much longer. I did some reading up on using marine grade deep-cycle batteries for an electric car. Supposedly, you can use a deep-cycle lead acid battery to start an internal combustion car, although it takes longer. I dunno if a bike would be different in this respect.
- I'd also like to know if you could add something like an automotive cigarette lighter as an electrical outlet to the bike? Something like this might come in handy to power something like an emergency radio, for example.

I know 750 SOHC motors came with both and a lot of guys gave up on the electric starting applications of it. I know with mine when I have everything running
and set correctly it only takes a bump of the electric starter to get her going. I have never had a problem with mine not starting , or at least cranking with
the electric starter once I replaced the battery about a year and a half ago. I charged it when it was new and forgot about it.

A well-running SOHC will pop right up at the touch of the button using barely any battery power, and then not a single watt more the whole time you're riding it. Unless there is something wrong with the bike, even a short ride will be enough to return your battery to where it was prior to cranking. The cahrging systems on these bikes are probably as reliable as any other 25-35 year old bike, most problems are the brittle wires, worn connectors, dirty regulator contacts common to any old electrical system. Keep in mind that a kicker or push start won't work on these SOHC bikes anyway if the battery is comepletely dead, because you need some voltage at the field coil. That may be where some bad rep may come from. Some of biggest enemies of these bikes is age, and folks "upgrading" to lights & stuff that pull double what OEM did IMHO. ¿ edit: yeah you can add a lighter/power socket, be a good idea to use a 20 in-line fuse on the + lead. One thing I prefer is just put a fused battery-tender pigtail on it instead. They're small and blend right in, make it easy to do the right thing and top off the battery once a month. You can still put a plastic "marine" power socket on a tender connector and plug it into the pigtail whenever you need it.

lol I think most of us run Kick only... or at least most of us will only admit that they have kick only and HIDE their pansy a$$ pink colored starter butt-on.

My starter button was red... until I changed it to black...ehehhehehe Today is the first day ever that I was able to kick start my bike...ahahahahaahhaha I

All 69-78 SOHC came with a kicker and electric start. The only ones that hide it on you are the AUTOs. They had a detachable kicker on them and finding one
now 25-30 years later is prolly not the easiest, and it will be expensive. So your question about "adding" a kicker is.....
2nd the charging system is good but like you said you want to add "STUFF". The system worked well during its time. One way to "upgrade" the system is to change to a DOHC solid state regulator/rectifier. I know when i added on to my chop it made a major difference in the overall electrical system. 3rd yeah you can add a cigarette lighter to the bike. It aint taken any juice while its not being used.
