I am trying to help a guy down the road get his bike going. The clutch seems to not disengage when you try to pull the lever in. I started by doing simple cable adjustments, this got me nowhere. I then took the cover off and noticed that when i try to pull the lever the inner arm that comes forward doesn't seem to move enough to do any good and I get a ton of resistance which makes it impossible to pull the clutch lever in. I tried to adjust the inner threaded stud that the arm turns, no help. Decided to dig deeper, he has the lifter plate on tight to the part with the four towers that the springs lay over, this seems right to me. The clutch plates and friction plates all look good. I did not see that he had what Clymers calls a spring washer behind the lock nut on the clutch hub, but i cant see how that would cause the issues, and he claims it didn't have one when he took it apart to soak the clutches in oil. It also doesn't have what clymers calls the clutch outer ring, something he also claims was not there when he took it apart to soak. Clymers pictures and instructions suck so I can't really get a good look at what stuff is and isnt. if those two parts are absolutely supposed to be in there that may be his problem, however they weren't in the spare locked up motor he has either. This poor guy is dieing to ride his first chopper (can't blame him, it is a nice bike) I am trying to figure this out so he can ride it, but so far i am stuck. His motor is a '73, the spare motor is an unknown year, but i assume it is newer because what is left of the frame has disk rear brakes. Any help or suggestions? would these missing parts cause his clutch to bind up and not disengage when the lever is pulled? Thanks for any help.
