In case its too tough to see, that's a groove cut by the timing chain so deep it wore through the cylinder wall. I knew she ran but was leaking oil when I bought it, but I was hoping it wasn't this bad. I'll be replacing the jugs, but I was wondering if anyone has ever seen this type of wear before? Is this the result of not properly adjusting the tensioner? Any chance I've got something going on i the lower end? That's a lot of slack to slap back and forth. The head shows some wear too:

But I'm not expecting it to cause any issues. Please let me know your thoughts on the cause so I don't make the same mistake in the future.
These jugs are off a '72...I've seen a set off a '73 on Ebay, can anyone confirm that the '73's are the same as the '72's?
