Most older carb dips were extremely acidic. I've been using the Berrymans for gum and buildup and it does extremely well. I have a 5 gallon can of Zep parts cleaner outside but would not want to leave any cast aluminum carbs in it for too long.
Please don't acid dip an aluminum/zinc carb body!!! It will fizz away as soon as it hits the acid. Use any and all the petroleum based solvents/cleaners you want and you'll likely be ok. And if you want to be environmentally friendly, use SimpleGreen. Just make sure you wash dry and WD-40 it well after you soak it.
