could also be a bent shifter fork, or the shift pins on the shift barrel under the shifter cover or the actuator arm could be messed up. I would look under the shifter cover first. if everything there looks good, then check the clutch basket. if everything there is good then check the tranny.

On a side note. I tore up the tranny in my engine, thought it was gona be a total disaster fixing, boy was I wrong. I called red. he told me to take out the top case bolts behind the cyclinders, then flip the engine upside down, take the bottom bolts out . I pulled the whole bottom end out and replaced the whole tranny with out taking the top end out and saved my self a lot of money and head ache. if you have to get into the tranny and have problems call me or send me a pm.
