Any HP, Compaq, Dell, Gateway computer in the $4-500 range should serve most people well.  If possible get an i3 processor (2nd gen would be better still) at least 4 gb of ddr3 ( with a max of 16 gb is better) memory and a 1 TB drive.   If you want to connect to your big screen TV look for an HDMI out port, but most computers have this today.

If all you're doing is internet, photos, etc. They'll all be fine.  Your internet connection will be the limiting factor for most of the stuff you do.  If you want to do gaming or other graphic intensive tasks, you might have to go up a few $$$ to get a better video card included in your machine.

Stay away from any business pcs.  More expensive and believe it or not usually less reliable.  Unless you are buying a server class machine.

And also every computer company has had it's lemons models.  Look for reviews on the net to avoid 'em.  Hp's not alone.  Dell had a ton of laptops recalled for batteries catching fire.  Their desktops are also known for blowing their power supplies.  Like I said, find a model you interested in and find reviews by computer pro's not the reviews on the walmart site (no offense to walmart shoppers).  Try www.cnet.com.

Good luck.

Matt
