If you are changing the air/fuel mixture at all, you might as well retune the carbs from idle on up, not just the jet needle.  Needle position only affects mid-range.  This chart really helped me understand the whole range of the throttle position.  I have a stock engine/pods/drags that needs 130 mains for proper combustion on the x-way, but I dropped the needle one position because I thought it was too wet in the mid-range... I'm still working on it, but maybe my hotter coils will help too.
