That really is a funny example in many ways..lolol..
He probably didn't spend much more than the asking price, as things were pretty competitive back in  2005..
Also.. that appears to be pretty much of an off-the-shelf-bike, and, seeing it has a fairly basic Rev Tech motor, it's quite possible one of Custom Chromes "Bike In A Box". These were sold as kits for about $12K to maybe $18k depending the model you ordered. The only stuff not included was the paint work and fluids.
But.. they were the epitome of a cookie cutter chopper.. You couldn't make even one substitution in parts.. They were very, very complete and .. realistically, a good deal.. for guys that didn't want to be creative..

Mark.. I can't believe you don't know who Donnie Smith is..
Like Red pointed out, Donnie was there with Dave Perewitz, Arlen Ness, Tony Carlini.. and many many more when the chopper craze took a turn, so to speak, and really made them more "Custom Bikes". Most stuff before these guys were fairly simple and many were somewhat crude. These guys made it much easier for anyone to be able to put out a pretty wild, kool bike on their own, without hiring a pro... The only ones that were really doing these at a high level of expertise before Donnie and the rest would guys like Ron Finch, Ed Roth, Ron Ebert.. those are the ones that come to mind anyway.. A guy named Dick Allen was way back there innovating and improving the look of Springers for the chops.. He definitely made his mark long ago..

Donnie is inducted to every Hall of Fame that includes people from the custom bike industry. Not many of the others have gained that acceptance with the media. Although Donne has been (and still is) instrumental in building the popularity of custom bikes, he is usually a bit conservative to the public eye. Donnie had bee approached a number of times to be a part of the "Build Off" hype a few years back.. but.. he passed as he really didn't like the way King and beers did  the shows. He saw it as basically a ratings hype whether it was true and fair to the competitors or not.. He was at alot of them to support his friends that did compete.. but never considered taking part..

Donnie Smith is truly an  icon in the Choppa World...

But.. is my opinion biased.. Fuck yeah..!! lolol.. Donnies not only a good friend but has always remained an inspiration to most everything I've done in this industry.

Red, I appreciate your mentioning me in your post.. but thats quite a stretch to include my name with the others you've mentioned.

Build it the way you want it ..... then learn how to ride it like you own it..
