I pulled my coils out to strip back the wire in hopes of getting a better connection. After starting it again the entire black and white lead from from the coils back completely melted and smoldered. Im guessing the cause was the metal mounting bracket on the coils was resting on the valve cover. Could that be what caused it?

Sounds like the opisite to me..the metal bars so to speak, that stick out of the end of the stock coils HAS to be grounded..sounds like your`s was`nt, hence the amp/draw spike in the POS supply wire (black and white)..

make sure them coils are mounted/grounded before ya try it again..

I`ve seen some pretty thin wire used for a power supply to the coils, and no problems..
