Linux rocks, until something breaks, installed hardware is not supported, or there are dependencies issues it would work fine. Hardware support is major issue.

That and if you run a Win32 emulator to run Windows and your Windows apps you are STILL VULNERABLE within that Win32 install. Then you have to consider some apps simply WON'T run under WINE or other emulators.

Best bet is buy magazines and DVDs if it is a must. You can lay them directly on top of a completely unsecured system and nothing will happen.

Second best bet is dig in, do some LEARNING, install Virtual Box, a fresh install of XP or Vista in a virtual machine, and access the kiddie, midget, or animal porn through that virtual machine. It is just a couple of files to back up and restore when needed and is "sandboxed" from your actual system. When it blows up simply restore the files and you're back online.

There ARE worms and trojans out there aimed at Linux. Most go after personal web servers, Apache, or SMTP/POP3, which is the default for most distro installs. All in all still far more secure than any MS personal or commercial web server but not without it's caveats, especially for the novice.

Linux IS more secure, but the package base (applications) is limited compared to the Windows platform.

I'd rather give someone a tool than a solution. Give them an answer and they'll always expect it. Teach them how to find the answers for themselves and they will spend a lifetime learning.
