i copied and pasted this thread from a while back into a word doc: couldn't trace it down with the search. i'm not sure who asked and who answered, so i can't give credit where it's due, but here it is (i get the "remote linking is forbidden" message on the part diagram links, so you'll have to copy and paste those manually):
Q: It's been over a year since tear down and the Athena kit does not label anything. I have
sorted these by size
and need to know which go where?
A: The beauty with the O-ring selection, is that the machined cuts are so precise, that the o-ring will fit exactly in the groove, or it won't... meaning, it will either roll around in the groove with a lot of side clearance, or the squeeze will be so hard to fit, the o-ring either pops out, or is distorted (out of round) in shape?
Go to Head: "E-4 Cylinder Head - Insulator." (
www.hondachopper.com/images/cylinderhead.diagram.gif
) Numbers 18 are the rubber coins that cover the four 6mm head screws (the one with the Phillips screw in the head of the bolt)... I don't see those in the photo?
Note that the head photo does not show the "circle drawings" for the smallest cam tower o-rings at the ends of the head?
Go to Crankcase: "E - 22 Crankcase." (
www.hondachopper.com/images/crankcase.diagram.gif
) Number 14 are the two larger o-rings that fit at the rear center cylinder studs. Here is where the oil is transferred up the studs and into the cam towers. Upon assembly, make sure these studs are super clean of debris, lint, etc.!
Go to Cam towers: "E - 3 Camshaft - Holder." (
www.hondachopper.com/images/camshaft.holder.diagram.gif
) There are no o-rings showing, but note where you see that flat looking half coin on the bottom of the tower? Flip it (the tower) over. See the shadow of a small o-ring at one of the holes? Slide any tower down the studs and follow the holes down to the head? See any machined circles where an o-ring would fit? Those are where your smallest o-rings go. Because the cam towers are interchangeable, one o-ring stops the flow at one end, and the other end of the tower is where the oil transfer hole feeds to the cam caps. The oil leaving the caps is now "splashing" onto the cam lobes. There are your two types of oil lube = pressure + splash.
Go to Cylinder and Piston: "E - 5 Cylinder - Piston" (
www.hondachopper.com/images/cylinder.diagram.gif
) It would be nice to see number 9's o-ring in the rebuild kit? These are (most likely) super dry and will crack leaving the groove if you pull them out! If you don't have the large o-rings for the cylinder sleeves, then leave the rubber alone! The crankcase pressure, plus heat expansion, tends to push oil up in between the barrel and sleeve.
At the top of the head you will see number 8 o-ring continue its travel up the studs. Here's the split between the two head designs that have a mid year production change in 1976 (I believe?) where you have to check your engine number when ordering the correct head gasket, as well as using the newer, "longer style" o-rings. Follow sin's dowel/o-ring
Now, I assume this kit comes with the taller or longer style o-rings? That means you'll have to check your cylinder barrel for this? If you have deeper machined cylinder stud o-ring grooves, as opposed to the two shallow (o-ring machine) cuts you see in the E - 5 diagram, then use the longer o-rings with your revised head gasket! You can't use an early head gasket just for this reason?
Now if you want to take a chance and use a late gasket on an early head, then by all means, go for it! Forget using an early gasket on a late head, because you will squish the taller o-rings out of shape, plus, raise the gasket to create a "hydraulic lock." If you have a hole punch the size of the (O/D) o-ring, then again, you made both gaskets with either way for any year!
Remember, all CB750 base gasket use the same part number across the board... from birth (and sadly) to the death of its production run.
