Shoving a screwdriver or allen wrench into the back of the tensioner is easy and if done with care is no big deal. But be careful not to put too much tension on it (much more than the adjustment spring itself provides) or it will cause undue wear on the guides and rollers. It will do as much damage as a sloppy chain slapping them. Chipped guides and roller is too loose, heavily grooved guides and rollers is too tight.

I'd rather give someone a tool than a solution. Give them an answer and they'll always expect it. Teach them how to find the answers for themselves and they will spend a lifetime learning.
