I just did the same method. Chopped where the temp fell off and simply added a turnout. I think back pressure (open pipe, baffles or muffler) are the issues to consider more than length. I do agree with Skin though. Seems 1 3/8 is about right but Ken at Cycle X told me if you have anything better than stock (cam, 836 etc...) these motors seem to really like 1 3/4 which is what I think his pipes are if you buy from him. I tell you, the bigger girth sounds better to me!
