Beating the hell out of a flat fender, how? |
Lead | |
|
I really want an exile short trojan fender. what I am talking about
Problem is it is $399... a bit too much in my opinion. It's a great tire hugging fender. Anyways, If I have a flat fender that is about 1" on each
side too narrow for my tire (200 width), can I just beat the hell out of it to make it not have sides? I really just want it to cover the treads of the tire,
and have an end profile like the tire, a gentle curve, instead of the usual shape a flat fender has. In other words, I want to change this [
to ( so how do I go about it?

heat it up and start wacking away......it would help to have a vise and some dolly's. It's not something a first timer is going to pick up right
away......takes patience.
Dolly's come in different shapes but here is the idea......http://www.woodwardfab.com/images/Curved%20t%20dolly.JPG

I can't answer your question, but WildWard welded two stock rear fender sections butt to but and ended up with pretty much the same thing for The Wolf. It doesn't wrap around the
tire quite as much but does have the look.
It was Honda first, all through the middle, and if I have my way, till the end as well.

Houndog, what width of tire do you have? That may be the easier way. I will go take a look and see if I have any stock fenders. That is pretty much the look I
am going for, just something real close like that. I would run without a rear, but the thought of falling off the seat onto the tire while moving scares the
shit out of me!
Edit: Gougeeye, any pics?

I would start with a piece of flat sheet rather than try to flatten out those sides. It takes a lot of hammer work and a long time without the aid of an
english wheel. To get what you want though, I would buy one of those west coast chopper "one ton ho" knock offs and just cut the sidewalls off of it.
It already has the right radius across the top to do what you want to do. I bought one off of ebay for like $50 shipped. It was used, but even the new ones are
only around $120.

I checked a rear fender, it's too narrow for the 200. I already have a 2 ton ho... I will take a look and see if it can be cut up.

I have been round AND round on this one. Trust me, you cannot do it yourself unless you know how to shrink metal as well. Bending metal in one direction is one
thing, but bending it around the radius of the wheel and around the width is entirely another deal. The edges need to be shorter than the center of the fender.
This is no task for beginners.
Buy the fender and cut it down. It is your only choice to save money and get want you want with excellent results. You can trim the side walls to match the edge of your tread.
"In the wind, with my mind on my money and my money on my mind"...now I just gotta get some.

Go to Harbor freight and get ther bench top planishing hammer. (providing you have a decent compressor)
And some hearing protection. The thing is pretty loud.

Using your wheel for a form, make a mold and lay one up out of fibreglass.Cheap, fairly easy, and you don't spend more on specialty tools than it would cost

Ya know, Craig (front st cycle) makes the kinda fender you're looking for for about $120. Check out some of what he's got for sale here:
http://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15868&page=13 and message him if you need something in a different size. Very sturdy high quality fenders. I've got one for my CB350 project. |
