HELP!!! had valve noise on the way back from whcm. adjusted cam chain and valves twice ounce i got home and cant get the valve tappets to quite down. it is the
valve tappets not an exhaust leak. theyre quite cold but once hot and the tolerances tighten up theyre noisy. i use the go- no go way. and when she warms up
she feels like she lacks power now. whats the deal folks? 72k

Check your points gap and timing for the hell of it. How did you adjust the cam chain tension? Did you take a small screwdriver or allen wrench and push on the
tensioner just to make sure you can feel it working?

im running a dyna and i plan on checking the timing with a tester light (no timing light). the first time i set the cam chain i did it by the book and the
second time i set it like i always do by pushing back on the kicker.the tensioner is good i checked with an allen key! anything else you can think of?

Just playing devil's advocate here:
Getting enuf oil up there? Hope its not the cam getting ready to die.... I believe it was Wrench55 that recommended that the cam chain tension be set with front part of chain as tight as possible. Smoking on startup? Indicates stem/guide wear and maybe nosey sound? Sometimes a badly out of sync set of carbs makes everything noisy.
I'm old enough to know better.... yeah right, like that's ever gonna happen oldhemi@sbcglobal.net

everything looks fine under the valve cover. hope im not about to smoke a cam/ cam tower! i set my valves again and they were all loose?!? so after setting
them again i spun the motor a couple times and rechecked and they were slightly loose again....... so i put the allen key in the cam tensioner AGAIN and had my
buddy turn the motor on the points side and i could feel the tensioner juuuussst barely move. i hope thats it. oldhemi im hip about the tension being up front.
usually when i put pressure on the kicker that puts slack at the back side of the tensioner and makes the front taught.after i nail these valves im gonna check
that im getting oil up top! and as far as carb synch.......ive bench synced them for damn near 4 years now and been good. i guess maybe its time to quit being
stubborn and buy a set of sync sticks. can anyone think of anything else?

Are you sure you're putting enough torque on the adjuster nuts? If you don't they will allow the adjusters to loosen up.

I pull acouple of my tappets every other week or so while it's idling. To see if my cam is getting oil properly. Just a precautionary thing after burning
up a cam last year. Every lil squeak makes me nervous lol..

yeah, are you shure you're tightening them enough?????
also, when you tighten them, they tend to turn a little more as you lock them down.......but that wouldn't explain the looseness......unless the studs and lock nuts are stretched/stretching. |

yeah im pretty sure im tightening them enough. im going to give the whole dilemma another go around

Are you doing all this when the engine is stone cold?

you should be able to kick it over and see if its oiling. even with 20w50 in mine i kick it a coupla times and every thing gets nice and oily.
i know this guy who bought a pre-built chopper, and ten years later BAM, herpes, no shit, true story

Relax brother...If your doing everything correct and by the book.....she will keep running.....If you smoke something, I will send it to you for free...just
pay the shipping. Ask for it and if I have one, its yours...We really enjoyed your company at the WHCM
You can't "Chop" when you keep adding crap...

where are you setting your chain tension?

sarge thanks i appreciate it just hate to see the old girl down is all. have you left for oregon yet? hows the doc doing?
flynnt im adjuting the cam chain with the adjuster at the back of the cylinders. i took her out last night and the valves seem right now. shes still got a slight hesitation now so im gonna check timing and carbs too. |

I believe what flynnt is asking is do you have the crank / cam in the correct timing position when adjusting the cam chain?
|
|||

I think the correct place to set timing is 15 degrees past top dead center on cylinder number 1.....which is right on the left side of the spring
perch.......but my memory can be terribly wrong at times.
|
|||
71CHOP |
|||

yeah, 15degrees ATDC.........I usually hold somethin in the end of the shaft of the tensioner as I turn the motor.....you can feel the tensioner rod go in
about another 1/8-1/4".......
|
|||
t1m32sh1n3 |
|||

tdc is easy but whers the mark for 15 degrees atdc?
|
|||
t1m32sh1n3 |

left side of spring perch. so there should be a mark to the left side of the advance spring? i dont see one! a mark that is
