Yo leathersmiths, seat covering question |
Lead | |
|
Hi, I got thinking about my new seat, and how to cover it and I thought it would be cool and a new challenge for me to tool my own seat cover. I need a little
guidance first though. What do I need for tools? I can get the leather from a shop in town. The stuff I can get is naked leather, the lady called it, not dyed
or anything, it is about 1/8" thick or maybe a little thicker. I wanted to use a piece on the bottom and top of the seat, kinda sandwich the pan in
between the leather. To attach it I was thinking to punch holes around the perimeter and lace it kinda like a baseball glove. I also wanted to put some
lettering on it of some kind. Questions, How much bigger than the pan do I cut the leather? How do I cut the leather? Where is a good place to get the tools?
If possible I would like a rundown, or kindof a step by step process in doing it. I would really appreciate the help, I am definately trying to take any
business away from any of you guys that are doing this already, I would just like to try my hand at "building my own". Oh and I would maybe like a
little padding in there too, not to much though. Would I even need it on a shocked solo seat? I thought of maybe trying to find some memory foam, like they
make beds out of, I saw a bicycle seat with it in it tonight, thats where I got the idea.

That seat pan would look cool if you took a piece of leather about inch smaller all the way around and drilled and riveted a tooled piece of leather on
top...you could even sandwich a light layer of padding between the the pan and leather.
Sarge show him the one that you did for slacker johns seat. |

Hey, if slacker john could reply to this, how is the ride on the seat, comfy? Sarge, any input would be hugely appreciated.

For leather tools to start out with. No need to spend lots of money... I did all the tooling on this seat witha crochet needle.
http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c384/wagouche/?action=view¤t=Finishing3004.jpg http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c384/wagouche/?action=view¤t=leather002.jpg First you go to a leather store and buy vegetable tanned cowhide..... Not chromed tanned. As it won't soak up moisture like you want. But vegetable tanned will.... Put some tape on the back of the leather while it's dry first then soak down the face with a rag or a spray bottle will work alittle better. Then press or carve your design into the leather while it's wet. Not soaked all the way through and gooie..... But damp... You'll get a feel for what I'm saying by trying a small test piece... After your design it carved... Your hands will hurt a bit from holding the tools......... So give a day or so to dry and harden. Get your seat prepaired.... Either by drilling and riveting or if your gonna lace a piece over the edge to hold it down to the pan... I usualy rivet or screw a piece about 2" all the way around the bottom. Letting it stick out alittle. Then after it's set to the pan and if you use screws. Cut off the pieces that stick towards your ass before you glue on your padding!!!!!!!!!!! Then with a really sharp razor cut the leather around the pan to about 5/8" around the whole edge so it sticks out enough to work with but a nice clean flowing edge...... Glue your foam on with spray adhesive. I usualy use two layers of blue sleeping pad foam for camping from your local wally world.... Glue one layer on at a time with spray adhesive. Once it's dry. Shape with an angle grinder very carefully or if you have air tools a 2" sanding disk works great for this............. Glue a piece of heavy garbage bag onto the foam after all the shaping is done to keep your seat from being a sponge in the rain. If your water proofing fails. Then start your sewing or lacing at the front or the back edge. Going equal amounts from your center point at the same time. Your top piece will also be pretty wet as your sowing it on. So it will dry and shrink to a tight fit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I use a small drill bit and a cordless drill to make my holes as I go. Just the way I do it............... And sew and pull it tight as your work along the edge. Pulling equal amounts and sewing both sides at once. Should keep it tight enough to hold your leather down in the curve of the pan. So there is no gap when it drys.... Let it dry for a day or two. (this can be sped up by putting it in a car with the windows rolled up on a sunny day) Then water proof with several coats of oil or silicone spray. And let dry. Then ride it like you stole it;.. http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c384/wagouche/?action=view¤t=Finishing3006.jpg http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c384/wagouche/?action=view¤t=bikeshow002.jpg |

Hey sarge, do you have any pics of slacker johns mounted on the pan, or if slacker sees this, do you have any pics? naguethey, what did you do to the crochet
need to use it? Did you sharped the end? How far into the leather do you carve? Is there an easy way to get a pattern onto the leather, I really suck at
drawing, especially if it has to be nice. Sarge, what kinda tools do you use, I can't see them very well in the pics? thanks a ton guys!! I got my leather
today, also bought a leather punch, pliers looking thing. It was $4 at Macs, I couldn't resist. The lady gave me a little extra leather for practice, I
can't wait to get started.

The crochet needle I used I did nothing too. I made my desing by simply pressing it into the leather while the leather was wet. Then it drys that way and
stays. I'm sure sarge is using stamps. Much more exspensive to buy. Found at tandyleather or fine leather supply shops. Sometimes craft stores will sell
small get started kits......
Stamps are used by hitting with a small hammer or usualy a small wooden or leather mallet. I made the seat on my bike with the hondachopper logo this way a few years ago. But I had borrowed the stamps. I've also made carvings using a fine wood chissel set. Very carefully cutting the damp leather just a little at a time... The design if you can't draw it freehand. Can be transferred by tracing it onto the leather (that is damp but not soaked) by putting the paper drawing over your piece and tracing it with a dull object like a crochet needle lol... Or a pen with no ink. Then retrace the pattern on your leather that you've transferred to make it deeper and more permanent. Do some test pieces first to get a feel for these.. Also it's a good idea to put the foam on your seat and ride it a little to make sure the pan is perfect before spending hours carving stamping and lacing....... If the seat pan isn't perfectly comfortable on your tailbone. Modify it before you put final covering on it.............. Saves alot of frustration. Good luck and take your time. I just traced my drawing with the chrochet needle I bought very thin ones too not the huge ones grandma uses lol.... They were pretty pointy right outta the package. And just rubbed the design into the leather. |

Here's a pretty good link that someone posted awhile

I guess I have one more question for now. I was assuming that the pics you have, until I looked closer and read over and over again, were all done by carving.
I think I assumed wrong. Naguethey, you pressed yours with the pointy end of the crochet needle? Right, and Sarge, by looking at yours it looks like you used
the stamps. I looked at the Tandy site, and Sarge can I ask which stamp you used the most on yours. I think it is one of the beveled ones, but how big? If I was
to stamp or press mine, if I decide to dye it I don't want to go to dark, maybe a little darker than the leather, the stamped/pressed will come out a
different shade won't it? I like the two tone look, so the lettering or design kinda pops out at you and is noticeable. Thats why I guess I assumed it was
carved.

The leather will aslo get darker when you oil or water proof it. I've also used waterbased and oil base woodstains on seats. As vegetable tanned hide comes
uncolored. A light shade or tan.

That is the stuff I got. I bought about 3 square feet, plenty for my pan and some to practice with. I was practicing carving tonight and it wasn't turning
out so nice so I looked back in here and finally realized that you guys were stamping/pressing yours.

That leather will also work nicely for a tool bag. Map out your patterns with paper and lay it out on the leather so you have very little waste. And you'll
get lots of projects out of one split.

if you don't find the answers you're looking for here, you can also check out the "paint, prep and seats" section over at chopperweb.
there's lots of advice and examples there, too.
