in the future???? And as a testament to these old motors...I rode it 30 more miles like that!

but seriously, any idea what caused this in the first place, Looks like holes in 2? pistons,
God damn you all, I was right

#1) Timing may have been off - Pre-ignition
#2) Wrong heat range spark plugs #3) Carbs set wrong - too lean. This would be my guess |

Look closely at your carb boots. Vacuum leaks will cause a cylinder to run lean.
Lean means HOT and hot can lead to holes in the pistons. What size bore twisted? I've got a couple sets of pistons if'n you're in need need. |

Well, it is pretty much only heat that holes pistons like that. Pre-ignition cracks pistons (looks a bit different) and you'd have noticed that much
knocking long before failure. Also, the wrong heat-range of plugs *shouldn't* be enough alone to hole pistons (but for curiousity what plugs have ya got in
there?).
Looks like you had the bike set too lean. Air leaks are a possibility, but they affect the whole powerband and I thought you guys had this bike idling smooth. If it was idling fine, it was a carb-adjustment issue. What mains and what needle settings were you running when it happened? |

I've seen contaminated gas (water I think) cause damage like that before.

....Damn Brother....I don't know what jets where being run in there either but I would have to guess a lean issue also... I can maybe dig up a couple of
good piston also and rings are cheap enough and it looks like you are about half way done with a ring job....
And if I don't belong...Who would have guessed it

Yeah lean was my guess as well. I'm running D8EA's with K&N filters. I looked at the valves and none of them are burned up at all and look nice and
clean. Weird to say the least. Looks like Imma try and fish the big ole hunk of aluminum out of the other motor and run it and rebuild this one as a spare.
