I would look for a 02+ Triumph Bonneville. Why, because it is not a harley or harley clone.

I paid $4K for my Shadow 1100, you should be able to find one for that money just about anywhere.
And thats what I would recommend getting, its bigger and more comfortable than the bikes you're thinking about, great on longer trips. Plus the VT1100's come in different flavors, wire wheels, cast wheels, single crank pin, dual crank pin, stripped down, touring, etc. A VTX 1300 would be nice, but a little harder to find in that price range.
