#2.....Need to weld a new tab on the outside of my gas tank but the tank is not completely empty...less than a half a cup...Can i still weld or figure out a way to get it all out??? Then leave the cap off so I dont create a bomb

I always disconnect the battery but it shouldn't really be necessay, but make sure your ground clamp is on good and secure and on clean metal. as for the
gas tank, get that gas out COMPLetely, fill with water, and make sure there is no possiblility of fumes in there or you WILL make a bomb. there are likely to
be a lot of suggestions for how to get the gas out, but this is mine. and BTW the less gas there is and the open cap are MORE likely to create a bomb. liquid
gas is sell likely to explode, fumes are.
you've been warned
God damn you all, I was right

Remember that electricity flows in a loop so it's a good practice to attach
your ground clamp as close as possible to the area to be welded. Less than half a cup is enough to blow you to kingdom come! Slip a rag in the tank and absorb the rest of the gas. Next shoot compressed air in the tank with a long blow chuck to help evaporate any remaining gas droplets. Rather than water I purge the tank with pure Argon for about an hour with the flow meter set around 20-25 and leave the Argon flowing all the while I'm welding. Remember, you need oxygen, fuel and an ignition source to make it go boom! The Argon displaces both the oxygen and the fuel. |

We used to drop dry ice in underground storage tanks before we started hacking away at em. Might be able to accomplish the same thing by shooting it with a CO2
fire extinguisher to purge all the oxygen then seal it up. Dont know if argon is avaiable to everyone.

Argon is available at any welding supply store.
The downside to the extinguisher is there's no way to control the flow rate. Most are all or nothing. |

just like rake said place the ground as close to the weld as possible. dump the gas out and you should be fine just dont get any sparks in the tank and dont
burn through it.leave the cap off over night with no gas in the tank before you weld.

up and turned into tiny pieces. Taking with him half the city block in the fire...............

I need to have a tab welded for my kickstand, do I need to empty my gas tank?

Yes. Anytime you weld your kickstand to your gas tank, you need to empty it. Especially if you gusset it to the petcock.

Filling with water sounds like the most logical and practical (in my case) to weld this tab on. Unless water suddenly became flameable I see no problem with
that.
I want to clear up the gas tank....I know that the fumes ignite b/4 the liquid fuel so the less you have that more dangerous. Just figured leaving cap off = place to VENT those fumes. GUESS NOT. Alright fellas thanks for the advice. cheapchop

The Fumes are the only thing that ignite. The fuel is vaporized at the liquid surface when it is heated and then ignites when it reaches the correct air/fuel
ratio. You just want to make sure that if there is any fuel left in the tank that it is diluted enough to prevent adequate vapor buildup. Id say water in the
tank is the easiest way to go.
