that's fucked up! Have you ever heard of theft by receiving? it's not a good thing, felony charge. I wouldn't get to excited if they had just
stamped the neck, but doing the motor to, looks way to fishy you might get away with riding it but I hear they have special units at some of the bigger rallies
looking for tampered #'s and they will take your bike. the motor number should read cb750E-******* yours has had the tag ground down and then stamped.

here's the skinny on how I bought this bike....
|
I bought it earlier this week from a 'lil old lady. She came to the DMV with a shoe box full of stuff. Receipts, title etc... She said her husband
bought a his and her set of bikes (my bike) sometime in the '70's. She didn't want to ride really and sold her bike. The husband kept his,
didn't ride it much and died in '84. The bike still has '84 tabs on it. She said it just sat in her garage since then. A friend of hers got the
bike running to sell it and that's how I found it. That's all I really know for now. I am a novice and new to this so I just am trying to get a grip
on how to figure all of this out.
Thanks Again, Dirk |

I'm speechless. I think that you might find that the original frame section numbers were cut out and a new piece of sheetmetal welded in with the almost
worst numbering job that I have ever seen. The worst I have seen is your engine"plate".
Besides the missing "E" that 750 cobra pointed out , your numbers are slanted and that plate looks like it was made up and glued to the case. Its not in the correct position - its off a bit and looks too small. It should be closer to the sprocket cover, further from the left and further over on the right. Judging from all of the gouges on the case and none on the number plate, you might just have yourself a bonafide stolen bike. Maybe stolen in the '70's. I cant see somebody doing this kind of stuff now for a relatively low-value bike. If your state does not use the motor numbers for registering, then I don't believe that it is against the law to re-stamp your engine numbers though. Just if you represent the numbers as original in a sale - think matching number Corvettes. I could be wrong though. Fooling with the frame numbers is a different matter. Could someone post for me...
|
It would be VERY helpful to me if someone could post some pics of what both numbers should look like on a "legit" bike. I did get quite a laugh
yesterday and knew something was up where on the neck stamp, whoever did it stamped a 6 in the first 9 position and then turned over the tool to make it a 9.
The 8 was crafted with care as well. It is starting to make more sense why there was a bit of confusion with the title and why the woman (employee) at the DMV
questioned the validity of the number sequence. More to come......

Does anyone on this forum live in Minnesota?

?? It might be beneficial to have someone in-the-know take a look at it. To know what year it really is would be huge.

eBay is a great reference for lots of stuff. Here is a link to an auction for a '69 sandcast. Sandcast auctions tend to have pics of the vin and motor
numbers because that is where the value is. There are 2 pics here that are good enough to show you the type of lettering.
Ok, as far as helping you id what year the bike *might* be - need pics of the overall bike. Side shot, closeups of major areas like side rear for
seat/tailight wheel, tank, motor area, front for guages and wheel area. If the bike was modified and it prolly was, id will be more difficult.
