I'd attach a pic, but its a pretty simple piece, and apparently one of my kids has pilfered my camera cable so I am screwed.

carb float guage |
Lead | |
|
So... we're having problems getting our floats adjusted right on the copper chopper... apparently it takes more than just eyeballin them...lol. I just
made a carb float gauge using my tablesaw and a scrap of 1/4" plywood... I think it should work fine... anyone else ever done this? I set my sawblade to
26mm high, and nibbled a channel in a scrap of plywood. Trimmed the ends so I just left about 1/4" of a 'leg' on each side to rest on the rim...
I don't see why this won't work, although won't get to actually try it out till this weekend or so.

I made a u shaped guage out of sheet metal once. Tried using it, but I found
that it was easier for me to set the float heights with a ruler instead.

Steve, I use a 6" Digital Caliper that I picked up at Harbor Freight for like 30 Bucks. It's got a depth gauge that you can use to measure the float
hight... Looks like you can order it over the web for $17 bucks... Check this.
Use the tab that sticks out of the bottom of the caliper. I set mine to 26mm and locked it in, then used that to set all 4 floats.

what I did was let the fuel fill each bowl...then took each one off one at a time and measured the amount of fuel.....made them all exactly the same and as
close to book perfect as far as the level went...
You can't "Chop" when you keep adding crap...

Damn, I really am a cheap Bastard. I made one out of a small piece of old wire coat hanger. I cut the SOB about 2 inches long, bent it just shy of 1 inch, and
wrapped a small piece of black electrical tape around the "handle" end. Saw it Posted here a few years back, and have been using it every since. NOT
exact by any means, BUT, it gets them all the same, and close enough to run with. Plus it fits in a small zip lock bag in my tool bag, with a extra fuse and
tail light bulb. Just one of those dumb little things that comes in handy sometimes. Like the paper clip I keep in there too, to adjust the carbs well enough
to get me back home if I run into a carb problem 2 or 3 HHUNDRED miles from home!

regardless of what you use, just be sure you measure from the gasket seat, not the lip of the carb body.
also, be sure you set both sides of the float.....sometimes they get a little bent out of shape and one side is lower than the other. |

All the float gauges I have borrowed recently measured from the edge of the notch in the lip on the sides of the casting and were marked with no compensation
for the 2mm difference between notch edge and gasket seat. If there was a special gauge for the 71-76 carbs that compensated for that extra 2mm to the gasket
seat I'd be interested in seeing pics of one so I can make one. All I have seen rested on the edge of the notch and couldn't reach the gasket seat and
measured 26mm at the 26mm mark.
Java or 74rat, do you have one handy you could look at? Maybe I have been looking at the wrong gauges. One of the gauges belongs to a guy who worked for a Honda dealer in the 1970s and he was fairly sure it had been in his tool box that long. He left the dealer in 76-77.
It was Honda first, all through the middle, and if I have my way, till the end as well.
Most people say what they'll do. Very few actually do what they say. |

Houndog, you talking about an actual float gauge? if so, I dont have one,but javahut does..
I just use the depth gauge on my digital caliper..which fits inside the lip, so its a true 26mm, when I measure it.. Here`s the caliper I use, regularly $36 ,on sale for $16.99 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47257 74rat when in doubt..knock`um out...H.C.C.M.F LOCAL 6978 Flint Michigan..3rd most dangerous city in the USA..come back and visit us..sorry we "missed" you the first time..LOL
