The one that everyone hears about is the "New Madrid" fault (Dec. 15, 1811). It is the one that changed the course of the Mississippi river and created Reelfoot Lake. Houses collapsed, trees toppled, lives were lost as a result of flooding caused by the huge waves created as the ground swelled, water rushing upstream, and riverboats were left "high and dry" on the river banks (if they were lucky enough not to be sank). It was so strong, church bells in Washington, D.C. rang. In the next 2 months, 3 more would occur. Each as powerful as the first ( one only 6 hours after the initial quake). And it does run close to southern Indiana illinois, Kentucky,Tennessee and Missouri area.
The epi-center for this one, today, was 40 miles from Evansville, In. and only 6 miles from Bone Gap, Illinois. There was an after-shock of 3.9 around 10:30 local time that shook my car as I was waiting at a traffic light.
I have been through several ones that has hit this area. The one I remember most was when I was a teenager in 1968. My dad, grand-father and I were getting a combine ready to pick corn when it hit. I had just greased a bearing and jumped from the machine when it hit. I couldn't stand up and as I looked out over the field, I could see the field acting like water in a pond, rolling like waves, out across the field. My dad yelled at me, thinking I was doing something to shake the combine. When he looked up, he too saw the land rolling. I remember one grocery store closing for 2 days to clean up the mess from jars falling from the shelves (that was when glass jars and bottles were still used...I know, showing my age...LOL)
Every few months, the tv stations remind folks to stock up on supplies in case another major quake hits. I'm certain some folks will after this one.
