I want to make a side mount bracket, but am unsure of what to use for a taillight. Does the plate need a light of its own, the white light I mean or is the taillight enough?

In most states, yes, you need a separate white light for the license plate. According to the ND DOT web site, a license plate light is required to pass
inspection.

If your taillight has a clear window on the bottom to allow white light onto the plate that's sufficient. If not you'll need a separate white light for
the plate. Just buy a taillight that has the window and you're good to go. Most stock bikes use that style (my virago, magna, and my buddy's sporty all
had one taillight wtih a clear window).

the iron cross tailights and tombstone tailights have a clear window as well.

ODOT is the same. I am running an Iron Cross Deal. Window lights the plate up pretty well. Taillite not very bright, tho. May need to do some reconfigurin. My
brother uses some of those clear LED button bolt lights you see on street rods. He likes it, as it does double duty, holding his plate to the bracket and it
works well.

This is what I'm running. Six white LED license plate frame as the
tail light I have doesn't have the window for lighting up the plate.

If you do a search on their site, you can get a copy (in pdf format) of the vehicle inspection checklist. |

Hey man thanks, found it. Also the frame that you are running has the lights in it? Where did you get it?

I picked it up on eBay. You can get a nice one for not a lot of green from Custom Dynamics.

There's a link in the "where to find chopper parts" for a guy that has all kinds of tailights. It will usually say in the description if it has a
window for the plate.
