Houndog....CLR did that great of a job on those carbs? How long did you leave them in the dip?

I use the CLR to remove corroded plating and loosen rust on the steel and the hard deposits left by decomposing gas only. It does make cleaning, shining, and
polishing much easier, but the shiny there is all by hand. No quick and easy way to do that unfortunately.
I try not to leave the castings in any longer than 10 to 15 minutes. Only long enough to remove the hard deposits solvent based dips will not.
It was Honda first, all through the middle, and if I have my way, till the end as well.
Most people say what they'll do. Very few actually do what they say. |

I;m not sure chemically what CLR is, obvoiusly makescarb bodies real clean, but muratic/hydrocloric acid does eat zinc real good. I used to use it to strip
galvinized coating off of steel before painting. ate the zinc right off
God damn you all, I was right

I believe CLR stands for Calcium-Lime-Rust referring to the stains it can remove?

Yeah, CLR is just the over the counter stuff.
I've known a number of people who used a muriatic solution to clean carbs. Used to be the thing. It was always too aggressive to suit me. Before anyone else gets confused. CLR removes hard deposits and loosens rust. HOUNDOG removes the dull and applies SHINY. You won't find HOUNDOG at your local Home Depot.

That part is easy. It's a little like electric-less plating.
I keep a bunch of fugly magnets in a box. I put the honda carbs on top, close the box, and leave it overnight. By morning all the fugly has slithered off the honda carbs and onto the fugly prone stuff at the bottom. When the fugly magnets have absorbed as much fugly as they can I sell them on eBay as rare vintage parts and track down a new batch.

Nah. Not at all. Any shovelhead or Zuki GS or GSX parts make good fugly magnets.

Yeh..what Kev 74 said: Muratic acid will disolve aluminum in seconds, fills your shop with strong fumes, burns your eyes, and makes you loose your last
meal/beer. Muratic acid works okay for removing chrome from steel parts..just do it outside and watch how long 'cause it will eat the steel also. I think
you have to watch how you dilute muratic acid also..acid in the water or is it water in the acid? C.R.S.
Some of the chemicals us old guys used are "controlled" due to them being used in meth labs etc. : Clifford |
