Lead | |
|
Yesterday I went to Napa, Pep Boys, Auo Zone, AND Oriellys.... all thier carb vat stuff in the 1 gallon can came with the strainer, seen three different
brands... but its all "Invironmentaly safe".... I opened a few of the cans.. and this stuff AINT what we used to get sum years back... is there a
supplier of the real stuff still around? Hell... the real stuff would desolve an aluminum carb in 24 hours if ya forgot about it...

got a can of Berrymans last fall at our local auto parts shop. Getting harder and harder to get the good chemicals lately, like p-coat stripper too.

You can still buy muriatic (hydrochloric) acid at most Sears Hardware stores if that is what you are after. That's what some folks used to dip carbs in.
Most older carb dips were extremely acidic. I've been using the Berrymans for gum and buildup and it does extremely well. I have a 5 gallon can of Zep
parts cleaner outside but would not want to leave any cast aluminum carbs in it for too long.
It was Honda first, all through the middle, and if I have my way, till the end as well.
Most people say what they'll do. Very few actually do what they say. |

I use Berryman's for the gunky stuff, and that white or yellow hard buildup if there I use CLR. They only need to be in the CLR about 20 minutes, then
rinse them in cold water then dip them in a Baking Soda solution to counteract the acid and stop the etching.
The shiny stuff all over is just good old fashioned elbow grease, but those two dips above have never failed me as far as a good cleaning goes.

Yeah, even tho berryman's is enviromentally safe, it's still not a bad carb dip.

I dunno how it can be environmentally safe. You should see what it does to my damn fingers!

The Ultrasonic cleaners have made the old soak chemicals obsolete.
Another couple years and us cleaners should be very affordable. |

I am not a fan of any acid dip if used improperly or for anything it is not suited for. I've been using CLR for about four years now and the results seem to be okay. That is, if
this is what
you're stuck starting with anyway. The plating was nearly gone and rust had moved in.
