white smoke from the breather on valve cover |
Lead | |
|
I let my bike idle to warm up, and I start to notice white smoke coming out of the top breather hole, ( i have a small breatther filter on it). I thought it
was was water in the oil, but I recently drained / flushed the entire bike's oil. Fill it back up with fresh oil, and I still have the smoke. any ideas?
is this a bad sign?

Does it go away when the bike is warmed up? Could be just condensation in the motor.

actually, it starts as the bike warms up. Could it be blow-by oil through the rings?

Whats the history of the bike? has it been ran regularly? (your daily rider in the past, present?)..
Has it been setting for a while? Mine is known for "letting off some steam" also, but usually only after a good high speed highway run.. Kinda sursprized yours is doing it at idle? How long are you letting this thing set and idle anyway?? 74rat when in doubt..knock`um out...H.C.C.M.F LOCAL 6978 Flint Michigan..3rd most dangerous city in the USA..come back and visit us..sorry we "missed" you the first time..LOL |

I 2nd what RAT said....how long r you lettin that sucker idle???? If it sets out side and your temps are fluctuating as in AIR TEMP you could be building up
some condensation and its "Steaming OFF". I know when I start mine up I get that commin out of the exhaust then clears out once warm. Check that
your oil level is good and not to high or it could be blowin past your rings. My first engine was this way and my rings were shot. Goood luck man.

When dt askied if it goes away when the bike is warmed up, I believe he meant totally warmed up. As in running for 30 minutes and as hot as it's gonna get.
As the bike warms up for the first time its gonna cook off whatever moisture has accumulated. If it stops after you ride it for 10 or 15 minutes then it's
normal and nothing you can do about it. If it's still steaming after a ride then I'd be curious where it's coming from.

maybe you have some fried piston rings

well, past history of the bike is pretty much unknown.....I recieved the bike with a fried wire harness. I took off the head and jugs, replaced the rings and (
i broke a set and used the brittle previous ones), and ran the bike for about 30 miles. On a ride with AJ (Mad750) and bike started screeching, and then locked
up on the road. We took the bike back to my house, ripped off the valve cover, and found the cam bearing shot and spun. We replaced it withthe 78 cam and top /
bottom bearings, threw it back together, and fired it back up. I let it idle...about 5 min, and the white smoke starts flowing from the breather cover. I'm
running 20/50 valvoline oil with a new filter. My oil bag is a piece of 4 inch pipe that's 12 inches long. I might have too much oil in it, because, if I
leave the bike on the kickstand, it'll overflow out the fill hole. I put it on the wrong side. Does this new info help?

What year motors have this breather thing?

With the bad rings being worn, that might be your blow-bye. Say goodbye to the compression. Did you take a compression reading? Did you clean that cam tower
screen in the head? Did you check the piston for all that gall metal; had to float in the oil and mix with everything (gray aluminum charred powder) and then
lube things with the oil. It's like an internal clean job. Or drain the oil every 20 miles and keep dumping the oil until it looks clean of gray matter.

Oil looks nice and fresh (clean and clear). Cleaned the top as best as I could see. Haven't done a compresstion test on the cylinders yet.
