OK guys...yesterday I popped in the "good carbs" on my chopper so I can ride it around and charge my battery. So I took it out and its riding
really shitty. Valves and timing are set properly. Carbs is "good" but not perfect.... this good carbs ran well when on the cafe racer. So why is
the chopper running shitty?? Idling is fine...but when I give it the throttle, it just doesn't have any power. It doesn't bogged down and die anymore,
it still run, but it just doesn't have any power. Since I've been riding the cafe racer, I know what kind of power I should expect, but this is way low
in power when compare to the cafe racer using the same set of carbs. Seems like there's no power. I stop and check, all 4 pipes are HOT. Then this morning
I decide to give it a run down of the complete testing.... so I start with checking compression.... I idle the bike for about 10 minutes or so to get it warm
up nicely. Then I pull the plugs. ANd procede with the test.
Results:
#1= 90psi
#2= 85-90psi (can't really get the gauge to set in tight and straight on this one)
#3= 100 psi
#4 = 100 psi
Are these reading too low??? Is this a bad engine?? OH btw.. this carbs have 130 main jets. WHat other test can I do to rule things out?

ok, slow down and think back like a detective-2 bikes, one set of carbs, both run different......................
(What's the compression on the cafe?) What else could be different....................plugs, coils, timing, valve seating & guides, air filtering, exhaust. All you know for sure is the carbs were the same, all else is up for grabs & only you can figure that out 'cause you've got the bike. This stuff doesn't come quick, just try to put any spare effort into learning the fundamentals and not the bike itself & the rest will come. Look up "Socratic Method" as it applies with troubleshooting. First and foremest-only ONE variable at a time if you ever want to be reasonably sure what did what

I take it your using one of them comp testors that have a rubber end that you push into the plug hole?

Hold on there, buckaroo. We looked at both sets of your carbs, when I was out there. On both sets the float valves were worn out -- there was no spring to
them like I showed on my set that I brought along. Before you start changing stuff around you need to get at least one set operating with good jets & float
valves. Remember we put my set on one (or was it both bikes?) and it ran fine. We went completely through your chopper -- cam chain, valves, timing, etc. I
thought you had just rebuilt that engine... in which case your compression is way low... but not so low that it won't run well enought. The problem:
neither set of your carbs are in great condition. Using a clear plastic tube attached to the drain of your float bowl you can visually compare the float bowl
level to the side of the carb as gas fills up the tube -- because with the fugged up float valves it is not going to work right when set at 26mm spec -- but
why bother. Just get those parts and rebuild at least on set right. Also, if I remember the main jets of those two sets of carbs are very different... Have
patience... all things come to those who wait...

sometimes I feel like a NUTT>... yes nutt... I went to play some bball to clear my head.... you see a trend now?? when I want to think of ways to do
things.. I hit the shower.... when I want to clear my head and get my frustration out.. I go shoot some hoop. Those guys there are my punching bags, well I
dont' actually hit them, but they are there for me to take my frustration out... Then when I got back, I took the "OK" carbs and put it back
where it belong... on the cafe racer. Then I decided to redo the "bad" carbs, once and for all. So I reclean and readjust and redo that float level,
as best as it can be. THen I decide to experiment a little. I did what yall say not to do... yes I did, out of curiousity.... I took the smallest drill bit
(1/16) and drill the main jet. It was a 110, now.. I don't know, but its bigger now. THen I check tire pressure and then tighten up the chain more as there
were alot of slack. I check for everything that can contribute to a shitty running bike. When everything is set and sound, I fire her up....and took her down
the street...WOW.... much better.... its not as responsive or quick as my cafe, perhaps due to the 180 rear tire and the heavier 9feet long frame, but now its
up and purrrring..... I put it on Youtube tomorrow for yall to hear her ROAR>>>> I guess the reason why I drill the main was out of curiosity and
also I just don't like it to go to waste. I believe in recycling..ahahahahha that 110 is no use to me anyways so why not turn it into something useful??? I
mean isn't this the spirit of chopping????? Just to show you want I mean about recycling and chopping.... I have a burgular bar that is spiral, which will
match my front fork perfectly... so tomorrow I will cut it out and turn it into my new sissy bar. But that is a whole new topic in itself........

oh one more thing..... after a spin on the new set up and the drilled main.... i garaged the bike and then pop the plugs... they all were looking really
good... no black smokey and no burn up white powdery residue. Its tan color... i guess tan is a good color???? not sure what kind of gas milage this bigger
bored out main will do for me....

1/16 drill bit is equal to a 159 jet I'm real curious what kind of gas milage you are getting. I haven't heard anyone running any bigger than 125 -
130's. Does the bike bog down when you light up the throttle? TAN is very good!

I am glad you got things running better. That is indeed the essence of building your own. But keep in mind that you are never going to have a reliable, easy to
tune well running bike with the float valves you have -- buying those and a few more bucks for some good jets will make a world of difference. That's one
thing about mechanical stuff. When chit happens and your bike starts to run bad you've got to be able to eliminate possibilities so you can determine the
problem. With the carbs that I saw... you are never going to be able to have confidence that they are not the problem when your bike starts to perform badly.
Fix 'em and you can probably go years before having to mess with them again. Just a thought, man. It was 70 degrees today. My wife and I took a couple nice
rides. It was fun. I want you to be able to spend more time in the saddle and less time stressing out over your ride.

Greg the parts are on there way. Sometimes next week. Anyways yeah I rather be riding instead of wrenching anyday. Well riding is out of the question today as
its raining cats and dogs right now. So I guess I will be putting on my fabrication hat today. Need to beautified up my cafe racer and fab a new handle bar and
sissy bar for my chopper. You will see the new look soon...

oldgraybeard: I don't know the gas milage yet as I've just done this setup yesterday. But as for as bogging down when throttle, no it doesn't bogged down... but yet I am only on 1st and 2nd gear only in a neighborhood street going no more than 45, but I did open the throttle up on 1st gear and 2nd gear to see how the response was and nope.. no bogging down at all. Also with me running 4 short pipes, its really loud and I haven't got use to the sound and feel of this new set up yet. |
