Hard starting... |
Lead | |

Ok so here is my problem the bike is hard starting I have to pull the throttle open a few times to get it to fire up good. What are some possible causes?

Which style carbs? Timing set? Too far advanced makes em hard to start.
Chokes working properly? What carb work has been done?
It was Honda first, all through the middle, and if I have my way, till the end as well. Someone's
gotta ride the "Plain Jane Cheapos".
I'd rather give someone a tool than a solution. Give them an answer and they'll always expect it. Teach them how to find the answers for themselves and they will spend a lifetime learning. |

Ill have to double check timing. old style carbs. Chokes have not been. I synced carbs but did not have tach so I had to try to do it without. Carbs have been
cleaned floats adjusted.

A lot of racks I have done the choke butterflies are no longer lined up, and usually one will keep the other three from closing properly. You almost either
have to run the bottom end rich all the time or have the chokes working right to get it to start easily.

did you give her the standard 3 primer kicks first?

I have synced the slides of several sets of carburetors within manometer specs by removing the rack, turning the idle adjust screw in a turn and a half
beyond where it starts to touch and using the smooth end of a 1/8 drill bit to adjust the filter side of the slides to a common height by turning the 17 mm nut
on top and bringing the slide down to where it drags the bit.
Mine starts first kick, cold with the choke or hot without, no pre-kicks, no twist, no primer, no bullshit, just one kick. (actually it usually starts halfway through the kick)
We must first admit to being less than we want, before we can try to be more than we are.

Ok so I have bench synced the carbs set the timing and its still hard starting I have adjusted the floats but Im wondering if I measured from the wrong place.
What else could be the problem? I plan on rechecking the floats when I get a chance. Im just wondering what else it might be.

Floats are measured from the edge of the notch on either side of the carbs. Pic here.
Are the choke butterflies all coming down in unison and all closing completely?

check your valves. make sure nothing is hanging open.

One of the choke butterflies does not close completely when lowered the other three do. But would that affect the the starting if I was not trying to use the
chokes? I guess I can go ahead and fix that when I take the carbs off to adjust floats.
Check valves for nothing hanging open? Explain please sir. |

maybe the battery is a little flat. The starter sucks up all the juice leavin nothing for the coils. Or maybe you are kickin it hard enough to really get her
goin. How you startin it? Other things that cause hard startin are big deposits on the back of the valves. If you've ever seen em they are like charcoal.
And like charcoal they can soak up a lot of starting fluid. : ). try a fuel system cleaner a couple of times and see if it gets better. Or like was suggested
teh timing could be off. Even if it aint off you may start easier by moving it one direction or the other. Yup you might lose a whole Hp or two but would you
notice? Especially if it turned your bike into a one kicker, no primer.

if you are sure it's the slides then disregard. I was thinking that maybe the comp0ression was low.
