i've use the latter...special bits for glass....(i have a chemistry background and used to make custom glassware for the lab about 8 years ago or so...).

How big a hole?
I use diamond core bits alot, carbide is much slower, both work well. I make a hole in pyrex with a torch and my breath. open it up from there. alot depends on size of hole, and size of tube you are starting with. Send me an email on what you have in mind, might be able to save you some grief.
