stupid question, anyone ever try a dirt wheel? |

I'm looking for a way to put some sort of brake on my springer, and the minidrum wheels on Ebay are $$$$. An older dirtbike wheel with a chrome rim and
small drum looks like it'd be about right, but is there a difference in the rim? will a street tire fit on it? can adequate bearings for road speeds be
fitted? or is the whole idea whacky?

I ran a 21" Honda SL175 dirtbike wheel w/ small drum brake on my old Triumph chop for 9 yrs. the small brake wouldn't pull you down very good but I
found it held on hills, but I had no problems otherwise. Trouble is,there usually 36 hole so make sure its not bent.

I believe there is a few other members on this board running complete dirt bike front ends as well. A buddy of mine has one on a different type chopper as well
and no complaints from him either.

You can get a street tire for basically all of them except the 23 inches. Which look cool, but I dont think they sell anything but knobbys for them. Billy
Lanes brother was running a 23 inch dirtbike wheel with a knobby. Looked wicked....but I imagine is road like a cart load of crushed assholes.

Actually, I believe Avon has finally started making a street tire for the 23" rims. Saw it on a flattrack inspired chop on the JockeyJournal.

Has anyone ever tried welding up the spoke holes on a dirt bike hub and re-drilling for a 40 spoke rim?
Wouldn't think it'd be all that difficult to accomplish. |
