would it be a bad idea for me to drill a couple small holes in one side of the backbone to mount my gas tank to the frame or would that be safe to do

What were your plans? Are you planning to drill a couple holes and then tap them so you can bolt your tank to the top of the backbone. If so you really should
drill it out and then weld in some threaded bungs. That will make it less prone to cracking at the hole.

Alot of guys have drilled holes in the backbone to mount a tank. Most get away with it, some don't. Never drill all the way through. The best way is to
weld in a threaded bung.

I cope and weld ona piece of tubing to hang under the back bone. Then a plate under that to for a upside down letter T drill the ends out to fit your holes and
bolt her in.... Works like a charm and most newer tanks have four mounting tabs. Unless you using an ole mustang or something like that that just has two holes
one up front and one in back. THen I'd most definately weld in bungs. Or change the tank mounts and weld in recessed mounting tabs into the tank to use the
T method...
