I paid $4K for my Shadow 1100, you should be able to find one for that money just about anywhere.
And thats what I would recommend getting, its bigger and more comfortable than the bikes
you're thinking about, great on longer trips. Plus the VT1100's come in different flavors,
wire wheels, cast wheels, single crank pin, dual crank pin, stripped down, touring, etc.

A VTX 1300 would be nice, but a little harder to find in that price range.

I second that!! My chopper would have been done about 5 years ago (it still isn't, going on 6-7 years now) if I hadn't bought a GL1100 Goldwing to ride while the 750 was down.

I would look for a 02+ Triumph Bonneville. Why, because it is not a harley or harley clone.

I have an 07 Bonnie Black, it is a great all around bike.

Like the looks of the intruder but I'd go with the shadow. rode my neighbors, comfy, good power, and honda reliability. Then kichk the guy with the sporty as you ride past him... ya know, just for fun!!

Get the HD, fun to ride, easy resell, cool to make into a chop, sounds better than the others, AND you get to join the owners group!

The Kawi for me cause I already have a Vulcan 1500 and its a damn good bike. However, any bike to ride while your building your chop is a good one !

dad had the 800 intruder, way more power than the 750 honda for less money. and a hell of a nice looking bike. 21 front wheel ect.

Depends what you want to do with it. My wife rides an Intruder 800 and it has no problems whatsoever. The shadow is a decent bike as is the Vulcan 900. If you like drive shafts and radiators. I personally would get the Sportster necause with a few $$ you could get a 1200 kit , an aftermarket frame and you'd have a killer custom or a chopper.

My $.02

BTW - I have a '96 shadow VT1100C I'd sell for a bit less than $4k.

I bought the Suzuki Intruder Volusia 800 new in '04. Now it has 44,000 miles on the clock. I busted the back fender(which is plastic) because I stood it completely up at 12 o'clock. In fact, all the Harley guys would tell me to pop it up whenever they saw me. Sold it last week for $2000 (out of work). Had it bobbed out with white wall Maxxis and 16" apes. I dunno. Depends on what you want. If you want the most bang for the buck. I would probably look at the 800 or 900.

If you are into brand loyalty I would go Honda.

And if you are shooting at resale, I would go with H-D.

Otherwise I would buy something from the 80's for about 800 bucks and tear the hell outta it. And you will have perfect material for cutting up later.

And as far as twins go, I am kinda partial to Yamahas. Except for that damn...
